This past week I took some vacation time and did something I have been wanting to attempt for a very long time… ride the Katy Trail end to end in one trip.
For those of you who don’t know what the Katy Trail is, it’s a rail-trail that runs almost the width of Missouri, from Clinton in the west to St. Charles in the east. The trail closely follows the Missouri River for about 2/3 of the distance, which makes for a pretty flat trail. The western end of the trail has some uphill grades which although not steep, are VERY long and tiring.
I talked Hannah into visiting her parents this weekend so she could pick me up at the end and bring me + bike home. Mom and dad came in pretty useful and volunteered to drop me off and then make arrangements for places to stay and they would meet me at the end of each day. I am not entirely sure what they did during each day while I was biking, but they seemed to be having a good time whatever it was. 🙂 Plus, it was nice to have them to talk to and visit with periodically throughout the trip. The last morning they headed home and handed me over to “Hannah Control” as I made my final approach into the greater St. Louis region.
Although extremely challenging, much more than I had ever imagined, it was probably one of the best things I have ever done. This was another case where the things that inflict the most pain and misery ultimately leave the most fond and lasting memories. Memories well worth making.
I typed up a photo journal of sorts about the experience and you can read that here.
FYI I think the title of this post is pretty clever because not only did I trek, but I was riding a Trek bike.
