I had the opportunity to do a hike up a mountain in the desert a few days ago. I always enjoy being in a place with a whole different assortment of plants than I'm used to. Here is the famous saguaro cactus and a 'teddy bear' cholla. Not sure who came up with that one but I loved the way the afternoon light lit up the spines! Desert plants are so fascinating!

Sometimes I enjoy using a 35mm lens. It's a pretty boring focal length but it forces me to look harder for interesting shots in a more artistic way than my instinctive documentary style. Often times I end up frustrated but I took it out hiking today and got a few fun shots. This is looking up at a tulip poplar!

We were doing a photoshoot the other day and I captured this rando shot that I just love! This was with a 135mm f2 prime lens which is by far the least versatile lens I own but its really fantastic at the one thing its good for. The relatively long focal length and large aperture is what gives it that dreamy look and I've never understood why more photographers dont use this lens.

Took my son on a tree geek outing today to go find the rare ashe juniper aka ozark white cedar. At a glance it kind of looks like its cousin the very common eastern red cedar but these are smaller with branches often forking from the base instead of the trunk, they are very aromatic, and some of them have these wild white stripes on the bark! Super cool!

Ozarks ingenuity at its finest... bike handlebar tied to a dead tree with a dry rotted rope. Carpet scrap embedded in the mud to prevent slipping when exiting the creek!

Side note, I'm sometimes surprised with the clarity of Turkey creek given that it flows right through the center of the city and probably half the water is parking lot runoff.
