Thanksgiving weekend marked my former high school Webb City’s 12th appearance at the Class 4 Missouri State Football Championship, cleverly named the “Show-Me Bowl”. We decided to make the long trek to St. Louis to catch the game and see a few sights in Missouri’s most populous metropolitan area.

The game was among the most exciting I’ve seen ever. The cardinals played MICDS, a private school in St. Louis, and neither team was capable of stopping the other’s offense.

Webb City scored on every possession except the first and when the clock ran out at the half. MICDS scored on every possession except for 2, both in the second half and both teams successfully pulled off on-side kicks to attempt to steal an extra possession, since it seemed the only way to win this game was to have an extra possession. For most of the game, the score was tied or one team had a temporary 1 score advantage.

In the end a total of 98 points were put on the board, which was a Show-Me-Bowl record for all classes. With Lamar and Rogersville also bringing home titles, it was a good showing for Southwest Missouri at the dome.

A 60ish yard score that sealed the win.

Eily hangin’ around with Grandad.

The next day we visited the arch and enjoyed the fairly nice fall morning in the park!

This weekend was Maple Leaf, a time when fall is celebrated in Jasper County. Friday night was the big Carthage / Webb City football game, which is always fun. Then of course on Saturday was the parade and associated festivities…

The big game. The first half was pretty close but then WC ran away with it towards the end. As you can see, Webb City has quite a sizable crowd on hand, I would say it well surpasses many D-II college attendance figures.

Carthage almost re-took the lead here. The Tigers, in spite of typically being a noteworthy team, have the curse of sharing a district with Webb City. Were it not for this fact, I imagine they would routinely be a playoff contender.

Eily was enjoying herself, cheering on my former high school. Of course one of these days she will be wearing Tiger Blue. Maybe by that time Webb City's glory days will have faded...ha.

She was more interested in sleeping. I was surprised at how comfy she made herself in there!

Friday night was Eily’s introduction to a fairly integral part of semi-small town life… high school football. As you can see, she was quite excited about it.

With me being a graduate of Webb City, and the fact that Steph’s cousin plays on the team, that’s who we support these days. However, we live in Carthage school district, so I imagine that at some point our allegiances will have to change, and I suspect that will happen when the girls get old enough to want to see their friends at the games, which will be Carthage games. I’m not really one of those obsessive and boastful WC fans, so I’m not terribly worked up about the idea of wearing Carthage blue at some point. As long as neither of the girls decides to play basketball for SIU or Wichita State, I’m good!

So for the time being we’ll continue wearing red and cheering for the cards!

Me and a few co-workers like to go out for lunch, generally on fridays under various names… be it the exclusive FLC (Friday Lunch Club), Fried Rice Friday (at the food court in Northpark Mall), and the latest incarnation… Friday Thai-Day.

Against my wishes some fellow employees tried out the new Piya Thai Food restaurant in Webb City earlier in the week without me. They like it so we decided to select it for the site of this friday’s lunch. It’s in the old building that long time WC residents will know as the former Dairy Queen near the intersection of McArthur and Madison. It has also more recently been the House of Hu (Who??) Chinese food. I remember what a dump the old dairly queen was, so I am quite impressed with how it looks now.

It’s a small place with maybe 6 tables, but the service was friendly, the food was excellent and prices we reasonable. We each had a lunch special for $5.95. I had the pad thai and we all shared some custard dessert and friend bananas, both of which were awesome. Pictured is Adam’s classic fried rice. So if you like thai food, you no longer have to drive all the way to the south part of Joplin to get it! This is clearly an obvious candidate for my official seal of approval.

PS – Avoid the ground chilli powder they bring out to the table unless your name is Jimmy or find pleasure in excessive mouth pain. I’m pretty sure my tongue is still bleeding a little.

Since I was spending the weekend in St Louis with Hannah and her fam, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make the 15 minute trip over to the dome to watch my former high school compete for the class 4 state championship. To be honest, I was fairly surprised that this years team made it that far, but apparently they knew what it took to get things done.

This championship game was more exciting than other ones I have been to recently. When I was in high-school, the game was a blowout 44-14 victory and the last time I went it was an agonizing 1 point loss following a missed 2 point conversion. This year the cardinals played Jefferson City Helias in a fast paced back and forth game that was up for grabs throughout it’s entirety…literally. It wasn’t over until a cardinal reached up and grabbed an interception with about a minute and a half left in the game.

I always find it impressive to see just how many people make the nearly 5 hour trip to St Louis to watch the game. This year was no exception, with what appeared to be the entire town sitting in the stands. I heard there were some carthage players and fans sitting on the webb city side and cheering for Helias, but I didn’t see them so I can’t confirm this. Knowing how so many Carthage people hate WC more than they like their own team it wouldn’t surprise me.

All in all it was a great game and a fun weekend!
