I know everyone has been wondering what the deal is with maple syrup. Whenever I go to buy syrup I see the cheap stuff like Great Value brand and Griffins. Then you have the pricier ones like Mrs Butterworth and Log Cabin. On the top shelf resides that I always wondered “who even buys that stuff?”. It’s the actual Maple Syrup that is made from the sap of sugar maples, where everything else is flavored corn syrup. I always think that sometime I’ll try the “real stuff” just to see what it’s like. Then when I see that it’s $7.00 for a bottle a third the size of the $1.79 Griffins I say “maybe next time”.
One day I was feeling particularly loose with my grocery spending and bought a bottle of the 365 Organic Maple Syrup that was on sale for $5 at Trader Joe’s or somewhere. Today I only had enough of the ‘good stuff’ left to cover 1 waffle so I decided to put Log Cabin brand on the other waffle and do a comparison. Putting them side by side made the ‘real’ syrup really shine. I can’t put my finger on it exactly but the log cabin kind just tasted like an overly sticky ooze with some chemical flavoring added that happen to taste kind of like maple syrup.
So the moral of the story is this: Don’t buy the real maple syrup unless you are prepared to see that all the affordable syrups really are kind of gross.

For some reason that post reminds me of Elf where he puts syrup on everything…
I think I will have to stick with the cheap stuff because I am way too cheap to buy $7.00 syrup.
I prefer to make my own syrup. I do love me some maple (or the maple imitation it seems), but for the price of the real stuff, I’ll be making the Deardorff home syrup recipe that in my opinion beats the socks off other syrups.
Perhaps you should share this recipe with us! I would like to try it. I still buy the cheap stuff.
ok, but it’s not your typical syrup. it’s 2 parts brown sugar to 1 part whipping cream, mix in bowl, bring to boil in microwave (or sauce pan if you stir often) for 4 minutes. pinch of salt (if you want). This stuff is good! Pretty much melted sugar, but it’s warm and way better than cheap maple. We had it growing up. Add in an orange julious and you’ve got the ultimate sugary, unhealthy, albeit not every-day breakfast.
