Just Call Me Tropicana

dwarf orange treeYou know how I like to grow weird stuff? Awhile back I bought a small orange tree with the intention of becoming one of the few (if only?) citrus producers in Missouri. My first crop initially consisted of 4 oranges, however one disappeared mysteriously one afternoon late in the spring when it was still about the size of an acorn. The other morning I came downstains to find two oranges laying in the middle of my living room floor. I guess the tree shed them during the night and they rolled around on the floor before stopping between the couch and fireplace.

Today I ate my very first home grown orange. Halfway expecting the orange to be bland or bitter, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it tasted just as good, if not better than your average grocery store oranges. But then when I think about it – why was I surprised? It was a tree ripened orange…quite a delicacy in this climate.

Although I am looking forward to eating my last orange, I will be a little sad because I have really enjoyed having such an interesting conversation piece in my living room. Without the branches being weighted down by large bright orange fruits, it looks like any other medium size house plant. Next year I am hoping to have 5 – 6 oranges, but we’ll have to wait and see how that works out. And I still have no bananas on my banana tree, but I’ll give it some more time. Ooooh the suspense!
