My new favorite thing to do…

I have a new obsession and it’s called kayaking. After hearing all kinds of speak about kayaking in the office, i finally persuaded Jason to take me for a float down center creek in his kayaks. I had never been in a kayak before, but it was pretty easy to figure out. A person of lesser skillz may have had trouble… although I highly doubt it.

We started at the Center Creek bridge on Fir Road (HH) and went about 5 1/2 miles downstream to my house. It was an amazing experience to say the least… just floating down the river admiring the scenery and seeing places I was already familiar with, but from a different perspective. Some areas were still, some were swift, and it was all equally serene…with only a few exceptions where rednecks had various “construction projects” enabling them to access the river from their home with minimal effort, but with maximum tackiness and degradation of the natural surroundings. Some construction projects that were anything but tacky include the old bridge… maybe old-old route 66? and a long stone wall that you could tell had been sitting quietly abandoned in the forest for many, many decades. It was about halfway between 171 and where old route 66 is today. I am told it is where the old lakeside park was many years ago.

Anyways… once we arrived at the location where I had left the atv for us to take back up to the house i we decided to float on down a little farther so Jason could see the bluff with the large cave opening (also recently obstructed with a tacky redneck construction project). Somehow Jason was able to paddle back upstream through the rapids… but I was not so fortunate. I tipped, filling my kayak with about 500 lbs of water and it was all I could do to get right side up and drag my kayak back up the almost chest-deep the rapids.

So… all in all, it was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in a long time and it was fun discovering how awesome the river right in my own backyard is! So if anyone is having trouble thinking of a great birthday gift for me (btw my birthday is tomorrow for those who don’t know) a kayak would be a great idea!

  1. I have never been kayaking, but I love all things river-related. It looks like a lot of fun!
