So remember the post awhile back about my idea to grow some strange and exotic plants/trees? Well, I bought the seeds from a great online vendor, and narrowed my selection to 9 varieties. I planted them, following the strange and detailed instructions for proper germination of the seeds, many of which have a very narrow tolerance for growing conditions.
To my knowledge, only 4 suvived the ice storm when my power-less home dipped below the freezing mark for a couple days. Three (Sabal Palm, Perfume Acacia, and a Dragon Tree) of the 4 have sprouted and are now flourishing in my makeshift tropical paradise. The 4th (species unknown) is growing roots like crazy but is still hanging out just below the surface of the dirt. The photo shows the dragon tree. The Sabal Palm is the small surfboard looking one in the middle, and the acacia is the back one with the droopy feathery leaves -which btw I have noticed its branches close and hide the leaves every night, then open back up in the morning.
I am growing lots of other cool things, but they are (mostly) normal things that people would grow. The good news is i put a few of the seeds aside back in december so that I could try them again in the spring in case of a disaster such as the ice storm. I will keep you all posted on the progress of my second run of cool plants because i know everyone is really interested.
