Finding Billy Cook

Posted on Dec 4, 2005 in Daily Grind, Rural America | 5 comments

So last night was pretty fun. A bunch of us went to the old (and very neglected) peace church cememtery near Joplin, said to be the final resting place of serial killer Billy Cook. Weird place, yes indeed. I appeared as though several trees had been hit by lightning recently, they were burned from the inside out.

So then we went back to Drew’s and I picked up where I left off on my ice cream from earlier in the night. I actually ended up finishing it up, back at wal-mart, where I had bought it just a few hours earlier (i went with joel to try and cash a check). Since we were already at the service count, I thought about trying to return the ice cream I had just finished…. on the grouds that it wasn’t very good. But since I didn’t have my camera to document the effort, I did not.

The next adventure will probably be hunting for bigfoot. If you want to contribute to this effort let me know! Also… the door prizes have been purchased for LakeEscape!

  1. I am the great niece of the late Billy Cook . In the picture on this site is that Billys grave?

  2. I’m writing a book on Missouri ghosts and am interested in more about Peace Church Cemetery. What can you tell me?

Also, if you have the e-mail address of Karen (who posted on your wWEb site she’s the great niece of the late Billy Cook), please forward mine to her. I’d love to speak with her.

    Thanks.

my great uncle, Capt. Flenner was the man who worked the original case in Joplin after the Mosser family was found. He was present at the burial and the story and the location of his grave has been passed down to me and my cousin (grandaughter of Capt. Flenner) who, along with her father, are the last surviving relatives of Capt. Flenner. That is NOT his grave. It is unmarked. Originally his grave was outside of the cemetary boundaries. Since that time, the cemetary has been expanded so he is inside now, but not where most people think he is. I know where he IS buried and I will talk to anyone from his family as well as to the man who is writing the book. I’ll tell you everything exactly as it was told to me by my father. I WILL NOT talk to merely curious people, sightseers or anyone who just wants to get a thrill out of hunting his tourtured soul. That man suffered enough in life. He doesn’t need to be tortured in death as well. Besides, I’ve always been told it’s bad karma to disrespect the dead…not to mention foolish to provoke anyone known to be so violent. Generally, people who are angry and violent in life will continue to be that way in death. But I do feel I have an obligation to share what I know with Billy Cook’s family and with people who want to record history the way it really happened, not just looking to find a good story to write about. If Karen or Jason are still paying attention to these posts, respond to me and I’ll give you an e-mail address.
