Our first stop was Red Rock Canyon, near Hinton.
This park features steep walls of red sandstone
that have unfortunately suffered much vandalism
in some areas. Still, it is a very cool place to
visit just off I-40 west of OKC. |
|
I make an attempt at climbing
the walls. Some people use equipement to get to
the top. I use my great prowess, and strength.
|
|
The Wichita Mountains as we approach
from the North along highway 58.
|
|
Me atop Mt. Scott. The town in
the distance is Medicine Park.
|
|
There is a large valley in the
center of the park where the buffalo and prairie
dogs live. I am very glad this area has been set
aside for preservation.
|
I wanted to take the direct way
to the top, while Matt and Grant wanted to follow
the trail. This was a fine idea until the trail
didn’t end up at the same place I did. After about
an hour of wantering around the top of the mountain
we finally ran into each other around this spot.
|
We found a cool little area on
the backside of the mountain with a great view
to the distant Quartz Mountains near Altus.
|
Self timer pic. It must have been
hard to set the timer and then run to those spots.
There are a lot of small scrubby Oak trees in
these parts, similar to the lower elevations of
the mountains in California.
|
A small lake just below the mountain
top where we took our much deserved break.
